Fair-Repairs

Frequently asked questions

New here? Start with how it works.

Does it cost anything to post a job?

No. Posting a repair job is free for customers and there is no obligation to accept a bid. Shops pay Fair-Repairs a commission only when a job is completed.

Is the bid the final price?

The bid is the amount you pay. A shop can finish for less, in which case the difference is refunded to you, but it cannot charge more without asking. If extra work is needed, the shop must send a request that you approve and pay for before that work starts.

What is a diagnostic fee?

Some shops charge for the time it takes to find out what is wrong. If a bid includes one, it is shown on the bid before you accept it, and it is part of the bid price, not added on top. The shop must write up what it found, and you can cancel for a full refund for 24 hours after it marks the diagnosis finished. After that, the fee is no longer refundable if you cancel. If you go ahead with the repair, it counts toward the repair price, so you do not pay it twice.

When does the shop get paid?

After you confirm the work is done. If the shop marks the work finished and you do not respond or report a problem within 5 business days, payment is released automatically. Until then your money is held, not sent to the shop.

Can I cancel and get my money back?

Yes. You can ask to cancel any time before the shop marks the work finished. We check with the shop whether work has started. If it has not, you are refunded in full. If it has, you are refunded the rest after the amount for work and parts already done is deducted (a prorated refund), and our team reviews that amount before any money moves. Your payment stays held until then. The exception is a diagnostic fee: if the bid you accepted includes one, you can still cancel for a full refund for 24 hours after the shop finishes the diagnosis; after that the fee is not refunded and you are refunded the rest. After the shop marks the work finished, you confirm the work or report a problem.

What if something goes wrong with the repair?

Use “Report a problem” on the job page. You say how much of the payment is in dispute. Only that amount stays held and our team reviews it; the rest is released to the shop. If the whole job is a problem, the whole payment stays held. We can release the payment to the shop or refund you, depending on what we find.

Are the shops licensed and insured?

Shops are independent businesses, and they agree in our terms that they are properly licensed, insured and qualified. Fair-Repairs does not currently check licenses or insurance for you, so look at a shop’s ratings and reviews and ask it directly in the chat before you accept a bid.

Can I call or text a shop directly?

Conversations happen in the built-in chat, where phone numbers and email addresses are blocked so everything stays in one record. Once you accept a bid, you can see the shop’s address and phone number.

Where is Fair-Repairs available?

We are launching in the Metro Atlanta, Georgia area. Shops within about 20 miles of your ZIP code are notified of your job.

How do I pay?

By card. Payments are processed securely by Stripe, and Fair-Repairs does not store your card number.

How do repair shops get paid?

Shops set up payouts through Stripe, which verifies their identity and bank account. Once a job is released, the shop receives the payment minus Fair-Repairs’ commission.
