Do not wait on these signs

Brakes are a safety system. If your pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor, the car pulls to one side when you brake, or you hear grinding, have it inspected promptly and do not keep driving on it.

What to put in your post

• Your car’s year, make and model.
• What you notice: squealing, grinding, a vibrating pedal or steering wheel, a soft pedal, pulling, or a warning light.
• Which wheels, if you know: front, rear, or all four.
• A photo through the wheel spokes of the rotor and pads, or a short video of the noise, if you can.
• Whether you want a diagnosis first or you already know what you need, such as pads only or pads and rotors.

What to compare between bids

Two bids are only comparable if they cover the same work. Ask each shop, in the built-in chat, to spell out:

• Which axles the price covers.
• Whether it includes new rotors or only pads, and the brand or quality of the parts.
• Any warranty on parts and labor.
• How long the job will take.

The bid you accept is the price you pay. If the shop finds something else that needs fixing, it must ask for your approval and payment first.
